and a good looker too"
Keith Greentree - BBC Radio Norfolk
“British Singer, Penny wrote her New Single, ‘Gotta Get To Nashville’ and it’s a more accessible track than her career opener from a few months back. Her debut Album has come out on her own label, but with the current trend of Record Companies feeling the need to jump on the bandwagon of signing their own British Act, to follow in the footsteps of The Shires and Ward Thomas, Penny could be in with a shout.!”
Stuart Cameron'a article in the December edition of Upcountry Magazine (Radio Producer/Presenter - BBC Radio, FOX FM, SKY TV, CMR Nashville)
Penny Jayne Black’ Album Review – “The opening bars of ‘She Got A Call’ from the debut album by Penny Jayne Black has a real Country twang which sets the tone for the whole album nicely which features eleven self-penned songs recorded at Sound Control Studio in Nashville with the band comprising of top session musicians. ‘California’ was the first single and video release from the album and has a real West Coast relaxed feel to it with a catchy chorus line. ‘Bootleg Band’ is a great little song which tells the story of going to a live music show, the musicianship throughout is very good but always making sure there is plenty of room for the star of the show which is Penny’s distinctive vocals and the excellent song writing.
‘Log Cabin’ is a proper Country music song with a Russian Cossack dance rhythm interspersed with piano which bizarrely works perfectly and even has a ‘Those Were the Day’s’ style La La La La at the end. The pace then drops dramatically with ‘This Ain’t Love’ which is an old fashioned ‘Torch Song’ which is where Penny’s vocals stands out best oozing with passion. ‘On the Beach’ has a much more rocky feel to it with a hard hitting guitar riff and is real Summer time song where you can feel the heat on your back and smell the sea breeze.
Overall this is a great selection of songs with an easy listening Country feel such as the catchy ‘Found Someone’ which makes you feel this is the right time for Penny. The penultimate track ‘Sunshine Fall On Me’ starts with a gentle piano/ guitar intro and falls into gentle rhythm before going into the excellent ‘Gotta Get to Nashville’ which is a self-fulfilling prophecy with a great chorus probably my favourite track of the album. All in all highly recommended if Country Music is your Thing.”
